Spiders in the Amazon Rain Forest

According to usatoday.com the Amazon Rain Forest is home to a mind-boggling abundance of spiders. In fact, 90 percent of all the creatures that live in the rainforest are arthropods: insects, spiders, millipedes, centipedes and the like. Approximately 3,600 species of spiders inhabit the Amazon basin. Some spiders are tiny, while others are much larger than the human hand; some spin vast webs, while others live in tunnel systems in the ground; some are solitary, and others live in massive colonies. Here are some of the most common spiders you can expect to encounter in the Amazon Rain Forest:

  • Tarantula: Tarantulas have inhabited the Earth since the era of the dinosaurs. They are the largest of the spiders, and the largest tarantulas are Amazonian tarantulas.
  • Brazilian Wandering Spider: The Brazilian wandering spider, Phoneutria fera, is an example of a highly aggressive and venomous spider. Thought to be the most venomous on Earth, they are colloquially known as "banana spiders" from their habit of hiding in bunches of the fruit; they have been known to enter the U.S. in this way.
  • Jumping Spiders: There are more than 500 known species of jumping spider, all from the family Salticidae. They inhabit the rainforest canopy and earned their name from their habit of leaping from tree to tree; this they do with a safety tether of excreted silk attached to their rear ends.
  • Goliath Bird-Eating Spider: The Goliath bird-eating spider, Theraphosa blondi, earned its name when an early explorer of the Amazon saw one consuming a hummingbird; their diet consists more regularly of insects and other invertebrates, along with lizards, bats and snakes. The Goliath is the second-largest spider on Earth by leg span, and the largest by body mass.
